Rabbits & Guinea Pig

Rabbits and guinea pigs are herbivores and naturally reside in grassy areas. Leaves, roots and seeds are usually the major component of these animals’ diet, so managing the diet of domesticated animals where these are not available requires great care.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are hind gut fermenters which means they have a specially adapted organ, the caecum, which contains micro-organisms that enable them to extract nutrients from plant material that would otherwise not be possible. Maintaining the right microflora in the caecum is critical and a diet high in fibre is the cornerstone to doing so.

Fibre is also critical to maintaining dental health, as a feature of both animals is that their teeth grow continuously throughout their life time. This is an evolutionary adaption to a diet high in teeth-wearing roughage.

Guinea pigs are one of the few animals, along with humans, that are unable to make their own vitamin C so it is critical that this is provided in their diet to ensure that the animal does not suffer from deficiency disease.

Barastoc’s pelleted feeds for rabbits and guinea pigs ensure that all of these specific needs are met in a convenient and cost effective ration.
